High Voltage is a straight-to-video offering starring ASJr and a bunch of no-names. It's a standard hack-fu movie plot - a group of petty thieves rob a bank that's a money-laundering front for the Asian mafia. The pettiest of the petty thieves is Johnny, played by Antonio. There's also a couple that are getting married, the typical dumb guy that gets killed within the first 15 minutes, and the guy who constantly challenges ASJr's leadership. Cardboard cut-outs have more life than these guys. The only marginally interesting character is the female bank manager, who is in an abusive relationship with the head Mafia honcho. She meets Antonio during the bank heist and gets hot for him. After the bad guy beats her up, she joins forces with the thieves, who are on the run from the Mafia.
The one surprise of the movie is in the casting. They cast Antonio Sabato SENIOR as Johnny's uncle who runs a fleabag motel in Yuma, Arizona. The thieves drop in on him, and decide they're going to hole up there. You can certainly tell where Antonio gets his good looks and muscles. His old man had pecs that would rival his son's! The only time ASJr didn't look like a cardboard cutout was in his scenes with his father. They actually looked like they were having fun then.
Well, as you can imagine, the Mafia arrives, the shooting starts, and the body count starts to rise. It's not going to spoil anything to say that both Antonio Sabatos live, as well as the bank manager. The bad guys are toast, naturally. Our heros, if you can call them that, leave the motel for parts unknown. Preferably a better movie.
There was one other half-decent scene in the movie that stood out. A fight in the biker bar between the thieves, the bikers, and the Mafia actually had some witty moments in it. A bright spot in an otherwise dim bulb.
The writer of this movie was also one of the gang of thieves. According to the IMDB, this was his first and only movie. With luck, it will be his last! Please, someone, shoot this guy before he writes another screenplay! And, Antonio, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? I know that his agent is pushing him into the "macho action hero" jobs, but this was a total waste of celluloid. It just goes to show you that Virginia Madsen isn't the only person in that former couple that makes cheesy movies.
In conclusion (thank Gaal!), I give High Voltage ZERO Asian mafia members out of five. This movie dethrones Warlord as the biggest post-E2 turkey that this Koba has seen.
