KOBA-TV Reviews The Practice

with Rockmond Dunbar

This is everyone' favorite Koba, taking a break from getting paperwork together for the mortgage on the new nest to review our favorite bald guy's appearance on The Practice.

What's that you say? Avery Brooks wasn't on The Practice? No, sillies! I'm talking about our favorite dog-lover, Rockmond Dunbar! (For you new folks, ask Vicky about Rockmond's "close encounter of the Echo kind" at New Pacificon '96...)

In The Practice, Rockmond played yet another angry boy from da 'hood. His character was accused of trying to kill a police officer. Rockmond insisted that he was a victim of mistaken identity and being in the wrong place in the wrong time. The problem was that he had an attitude that wouldn't quit. He had fired three lawyers before the rookie lawyer in the law firm took his case on as a pro bono (or freebie). Anyway,  Rock's character was incapable of communicating in other than a raised voice. Unfortunately, this got him into a LOT of trouble. So much so that he wound up being chained and handcuffed in the courtroom, and his mouth was sealed with duct tape. Owwww....

Now, a lesser actor couldn't have expressed the character's rage in those circumstances. However, our Rockmond is NOT a lesser actor! He looked just as fierce without saying a word. Even with his outbursts, his lawyer did manage to get him acquitted. When he was released, Rockmond walked out of the courtroom without so much as a "thanks" to his lawyer. It was really awful, but totally in character.

Now, all of the comments I was thinking of involved Rockmond, handcuffs, and the Five-Year reunion. So, I'll just leave that up to everyone's imagination. As for Rockmond, he did a wonderful job! The rest of the show was standard lawyer show fare. I liked the large-sized woman, simply because us zaftig chyx gotta stick together. Maybe she can tackle Lara Flynn Boyle and force-feed her... Our other E2 alum, Kelli Williams, didn't do much of anything except counsel Lara's character. (Maybe going out into the desert,  crawling around in some caves, and hanging out with strange tall guys with lightning staffs would help?) But Rockmond just smoldered with intensity. However, it was yet another "angry gangsta kid" role. When is Hollyweird gonna get a clue and realize that not all young black men are into crime and drugs?

(Er... MJK... get off the soapbox and finish the review. We need to get to our 1997 taxes on the computer...)

Yes, Mom. In conclusion, I give Rockmond five handcuffs out of five for his role on The Practice. And I'll give them to him at the Reunion... WOOHOO!!!
