These are pictures of my husband, John White, dressed
for the Shore Leave 1999 Masquerade. He's dressed as a
Taelon from the show Gene
Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict. Taelons are
beings from another planet that came to Earth, ostensibly
to help humankind, but they have ulterior motives. They
actually look like this.
Judge for yourself if I did a good job.
Well, I got into the act, literally, at the Far Point Masquerade 2000. I
was Seven of Eleven, the Trailer Trash Borg. And, guess what? I won
third place in the Star Trek category! And yes, there were more than three
entries - I think. Here's some pictures of me and friends.
John and I went to the Star
Trek Experience in Las Vegas last year and got
the inspiration from this from overdosing on the STE, then coming out and
seeing a bronze statue of Elvis in the lobby of the Hilton. We put two
things together and came up with the answer to the Borg Queen - the BORG
KING! John took third in the Star Trek category. Not bad, considering the
groups that won 1st and 2nd place were judged "Best in Show" and "Best
Presentation". We're hoping to improve the costume and show it again.
Well, this was tougher than I thought it would be. John and I saw Shrek the first
weekend, and thought it was wonderful! I wondered if anyone was going to
do Princess Fiona for the masquerade. Well, as soon as Fiona changed into
an ogre, I decided that I was going to do it. I found most of what I
wanted on eBay, even the ears, which
were given away as a promotion by some of the theaters showing the sneak
preview. The cloth, a green velour, was really hard to find in the middle
of the summer. Thanks to a guy on eBay who had it! The crown was a plastic
visor that I cut into the shape I needed. Unfortunately, my presentation
was pretty weak, and I lost out in the fantasy category to a Yankees fan
and a guy wearing a bra. Oh, well. I did get a workmanship award for it.
Farpoint: February 2002. Times were hard. John had been laid off for
months. We wanted to do something for Masquerade, but we didn't have a lot
of money. So, we came up with our most warped idea yet. Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone had come out a few months before that, and we
decided to do a skit to show what life had been like when Harry Potter had
grown up, married Hermione Granger, and settled into middle-class wizardly
life. I had a tacky old muumuu, used the wig from Fiona and the curlers
from Seven of Eleven to do Hermione, and John used an old red sweater for
Harry. The only things we bought were a large Gryffindor patch from eBay,
a collapsible wand, and some M&M's for "Wizard Viagra". We went in not
expecting to get anything, but we wound up winning "Most Original"! We
were stunned!
John had been DYING to do Lorne the Host from Angel for quite a
while. So we went to the Salvation Army and got the most hideous
burnt-orange suit that we could find, paired it up with a turquoise shirt,
and a purple tie. We got the green makeup and horns from the wonderful
people at Kinetic Artistry
in Takoma Park, MD. The hair was colored hairspray from our local beauty
supply store. We got to talk to the actor who portrays Lorne, Andy Hallett, at CreepCon in
Baltimore. He was thrilled that someone wanted to do Lorne, and helped us
pick the best photo to show the makeup. It paid off, because John WON the
Horror category!
Okay, this isn't a real character. I found the fabrics at JoAnn's and just
had to have it. Then I wondered what I could make out of it. So, I
made a simple sleeveless dress, a cape, and a headpiece out of the
leftovers from the cape, and came up with the Queen of the Stars. My
schtick was to come out, model my costume, and say "What, you were
expecting someone thin? Space is BIG!" It got a good laugh, a lot of
cheers from the phat chicks, and a third place in the Fantasy category!
